Tajik Security Council Secretary Nasrullo Mahmoudzoda met with his Russian counterpart Nikolai Patrushev in Uzbekistan’s capital, Tashkent, on the sidelines of the 17th Meeting of Security Council Secretaries of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Member Nations that is kicking off in Tashkent today.

According to the Russian Security Council press center, Patrushev and Mahmoudzoda noted the dynamics of development of the Russian-Tajik relations as well as the high level of cooperation between the two countries within the main regional and international organizations such as CIS, SCO and the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO).

The parties reportedly discussed issues related to bilateral interaction in various areas.

A special attention was given to the latest developments in Afghanistan.  The parties expressed concern about the deepening humanitarian and economic crisis in Afghanistan and activation of actions of terrorists groups in that country.

In this context, Patrushev and Mahmoudzoda reportedly outlined cooperation between Russia and Tajikistan in the anti-terrorist sphere and in the field of military security.

Meanwhile, the 17th SCO Security Council Secretaries’ Meeting that is kicking off in Tashkent today is expected to discuss further expansion of cooperation in countering terrorism, extremism, trafficking in narcotic drugs and weapons, and transnational organized crime as well as providing international information security.

The Security Council of Tajikistan, which had previously been an independent government body, is now subordinate to President’s Executive Office.

On June 13, 2018, the Majlisi Namoyandagon (Tajikistan’s lower chamber of parliament) endorsed amendments proposed by the government to the country’s law on security.  Under these amendments, the Security Council is now subordinate to President’s Executive Office.

The Security Council of the Republic of Tajikistan is a consultative body of Tajik Resident that works out the President's decisions on national security affairs.  Composed of key ministers and agency heads and chaired by the President of Tajikistan, the Security Council was established to be a forum for coordinating and integrating national security policy.
