Safe drinking water for the Rasht Valley

Press-Release

A new drinking water supply scheme (DWSS) was handed over to the local Government of Sebak village in Nurobod District during the inauguration on 30 August 2022. The recently renovated scheme is co-financed by the Government of Switzerland and the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN).

Sebak Village is in Nurobod District – one of the seven districts in the Rasht Valley situated in the northeastern part of Tajikistan. Until recently, the households in Sebak Village lacked equitable access to basic public services such as safe and clean drinking water and adequate sanitation facilities. To address this issue, the construction of the Sebak DWSS in Nurobod District was undertaken under the Integrated Health and Habitat Improvement Project, Phase II (IHHI- II) in Rasht Valley. The DWSS is designed to enhance equitable and easy access to safe and clean drinking water for over 360 people in Sebak Village, half of whom are women.

The design of the Sebak DWSS leveraged learnings from the Aga Khan Agency for Habitat’s (AKAH) experiences of constructing water and sanitation projects in the Rasht Valley, and across Tajikistan.  Local people of the village have been actively involved during the planning and construction of the scheme. All households that gained access to clean and safe drinking water were connected with individual water meters to facilitate regular collection of water tariffs – an important criterion in ensuring sustainability of the scheme. During the inauguration ceremony, the Sebak DWSS was handed over the local municipal government.

In addition to the Sebak DWSS, the IHHI-II project has supported the construction of six other DWSS in five districts of the Rasht Valley to provide equitable access to safe and clean drinking water to more than 12,460 people, half of whom are women. As a result, there has been a reduction in the incidence of waterborne diseases in the target areas. All DWSSs constructed under the IHHI-II project align with the broader goal of the project to enable communities in the Rasht Valley to benefit from basic public services in a peaceful and equitable society to improve their quality of life.

The IHHI-II project is co-financed by the Government and Switzerland and the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) aimed to enable communities in the Rasht Valley to benefit from basic public services in a peaceful and equitable society to improve their quality of life. it’s the project activities are executed in all seven districts of Rasht Valley benefitting an estimated 120,000 people living in around 140 villages.

Stressing the significance of the Sebak DWSS in improving the quality of life of the communities, the District Chairman of Nurobod stated, “We feel that this water scheme is a gift to our community. It connects all households and the school, so everyone will be able to drink clean water. We are thankful to the Swiss Government and AKDN for their contributions in our village.”
