Liquefied natural gas prices continue going down in Tajikistan

Asia-Plus

The liquefied natural gas (LNG) prices have come down significantly in Tajikistan, except the Gorno Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO).

The price for one liter of LNG in Dushanbe fell on average from 4.90 somonis on January 6 to 3.90 somonis on January 13, with similar price falls in other parts of the country.

In Khujand, the capital of the northern province of Sughd, the price for one liter of liquefied natural gas fell on average from 5.00 somonis on January 6 to 4.00 somonis on January 13.

In Bokhtar, the capital of the southern province of Sughd, the price for one liter of liquefied natural gas fell on average from 5.10 somonis on January 6 to 4.10 somonis on January 13.

Meanwhile, current price for one liter of LNG in GBAO’s capital, Khorog, is 7.00 somonis.

It is to be noted that more than 60 percent of the country's motor vehicles use liquefied natural gas as fuel.

Kazakhstan provides the bulk of Tajikistan’s LNG imports, accounting for about 90 percent of Tajikistan’s LNG imports.

An expert, who wanted to remain unnamed, said that the LNG price fall has resulted from increasing LNG imports.

About twenty companies in Tajikistan are engaged in supplying the country with LNG.   The share of none of these companies exceeds 20 percent of a total volume of LNG imports.

Over the first ten months last year, Tajikistan reportedly imported about 329,000 tons of liquefied natural gas, which is 11 percent more than over the same period of 2021.

Meanwhile, prices for other fuels remain unchanged in Tajikistan. Current price for one liter of 92-octane gasoline, which is the most sought-after grade of automobile gas in the country, is 7.80 somonis, one liter of 95-octane gasoline – 8.20 somonis, and one liter of diesel fuel – 12.00 somonis.
