Electronic identification cards for migrants to be issued in Moscow next year

Asia-Plus

Starting in 2025, Moscow will issue electronic identification cards for foreign nationals, allowing authorities to verify up-to-date information on each individual, TASS reported on October 25, citing Moscow Mayor, Sergey Sobyanin.

"Next year, as part of a federal experiment, we are introducing an electronic passport for migrants. The card will contain all relevant information: arrival date, biometric data, employment details, registered residence, and other data. Police will have scanning devices for data verification during their checks," Sobyanin stated.

The electronic ID will be the primary document verified for migrants. If any issues arise, law enforcement will be required to take appropriate action.

"If a red flag indicates that someone is on a wanted list, has overstayed, or violated immigration regulations, they cannot be released," explained the mayor.

Sobyanin added that, as part of this experiment, biometric screening will also be introduced next year at Moscow’s airports for foreigners arriving without needing a visa to enter Russia.
