January purge: Rahmon shakes up power-wielding structure officials

Asia-Plus

Tajikistan's President Emomali Rahmon has introduced staff changes to the country’s law enforcement and security agencies.

The Tajik president’s official website says specifically, “young and professional personnel with work experience in the agencies” were appointed as heads of several departments within the Prosecutor General's Office, prosecutors for the cities of Khorog, Kanibodom, Tursunzoda, and the districts of Rasht, Farkhor, Nosir-Khusrav, Baljuvon, as well as military prosecutors for the Bokhtar and Sughd garrisons.

Decrees regarding the new appointments in the prosecutor's office have not yet been published.

President’s decrees also appointed “professional officers” to head some departments, divisions, and training centers within the National Guard.  Changes were also made in the Ministry of Defense, where commanders of several military units and military commissioners for various cities and districts were replaced.

On January 9, Rahmon met with the newly appointed personnel, emphasizing that “ensuring the security and stability of the state, protecting the country’s borders, and preserving the achievements of the independence era are the duties of every leader, serviceman, and law enforcement officer.”

According to the Tajik president’s official website, the main topics of the meeting included combating all forms of violations, including corruption and non-regulation relationships, fostering a healthy environment in military service, learning foreign languages, mastering modern military equipment and technology, physical training, and improving the level and quality of patriotic education among Armed Forces personnel.

Among the dismissed prosecutors was the acting prosecutor of Kanibodom, Parviz Orifzoda, who came under scrutiny in 2024 due to a series of murders in the city.  It is unclear when Orifzoda was appointed to this position; previously, he had served as the prosecutor for the Gorno Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO) but was dismissed in February 2023.

It is not yet known if Orifzoda received a new appointment, but he was seen in photographs released by the president’s website during Rahmon's January 9 meeting with the newly appointed personnel.
