In 2024, Tajikistan exported a total of 2.478 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity, according to the country’s Ministry of Energy and Water Resources (MoEWR).
This figure represents a 204 million kWh (7.8%) decrease compared to 2023.
Last year, major electricity export destinations were Afghanistan – 1.5304 billion kWh (revenue: 705.2 million somonis, price: 46 dirams (4.2 cents) per kWh); Uzbekistan – 943.9 million kWh (revenue: 201.2 million somonis, price: 21.3 dirams (around 2 cents) per kWh0; and Kyrgyzstan – 4 million kWh (revenue: 428,700 somonis, price: 10.7 dirams (0.98 cents) per kWh).
In 2024, Tajikistan generated a total of 22.428 billion kWh of electricity, with exports accounting for just over 11% of total production.
Meanwhile, the Agency for Statistics under the President of Tajikistan, says Tajikistan last year earned approximately US$113 million from electricity exports, a 2.4-percent increase compared to 2023.
Electricity exports reportedly accounted for 5.8% of Tajikistan’s total exports in 2024.
According to Barqi Tojik, during the autumn-winter period, when Tajikistan itself faces electricity shortages, only small amounts of electricity are supplied to Afghanistan to maintain infrastructure and power lines.
Meanwhile, the agreement with Uzbekistan is strictly limited to summer deliveries only.
