Prices in the first days of the holy month of Ramadan: they are already rising

Over the first two months of 2025, significant changes in food prices have been recorded in Tajikistan.

According to the Agency for Statistics under the President of Tajikistan, compared to January and February 2024, food prices over the first two months of this year have increased by 3.6%.  This indicates that inflation in the country remains moderate, but food prices have risen noticeably.

One of the most significant changes ahead of the holy month of Ramadan is the sharp increase in rice prices.  Its cost has surged by 9.5% compared to January 2024 and by 5.0% compared to December 2024.

Beef and lamb have also seen substantial price hikes—rising by 25.3%.

In February 2025, compared to the same period last year, the highest price increases were observed for:

  • Cottonseed oil (+20.5%)
  • Sunflower oil (+9.3%)
  • Dairy products (+5.9%), including milk (+7.7%) and chakka (+2.1%).

 

Among vegetables, the biggest price hikes were recorded for:

  • Cabbage (+47.0%)
  • Carrots (+37.8%)
  • Garlic (+22.2%).

 

However, some products have become cheaper compared to the same period in 2024.  Prices for bakery products and grains have decreased by 1.1%, with buckwheat dropping by 19.4% and flour by 9.8%.

Among fruits, the biggest declines were observed in:

  • Lemons (-48.3%)
  • Grapes (-33.9%)
  • Bananas (-5.1%).
