Reopening of border crossing points along the Tajikistan-Kyrgyzstan border

Date:

The presidents of Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan today participated online in the reopening of two border crossing points (BCPs) along the Tajik-Kyrgyz border:

  • Kyzyl-Bel BCP
  • Kayragach BCP

These BCPs mark a significant step toward improving bilateral relations between the two countries.

Border issue resolved in the interests of both nations

Before the reopening of the BCPs, Saimumin Yatimov, head of Tajikistan’s State Committee for National Security (SCNS), stated to Kyrgyz media that the border issue was resolved exclusively in the interests of both peoples.

“There is criticism of this decision on both sides, including in Tajikistan. But what matters most is that the interests of both states have been upheld. Our relations will now be brotherly and historical—just like real family ties. The issue of opening all checkpoints has been decided in principle. Two are opening today, and the rest will follow,” Yatimov said.

Background of the agreement

Earlier, on February 21, security chiefs of Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan, Saimumin Yatimov and Kamchybek Tashiyev, initialed border delimitation documents in Bishkek.

On February 27, Kamchybek Tashiyev presented details of the agreement at a session of the Kyrgyz Parliament, announcing that the classified status of the document had been lifted.  He also confirmed that land exchanges were part of the agreement.

Tajikistan has not yet issued an official statement on the contents of the document.

This development signals a major shift in Kyrgyz-Tajik relations, with both governments moving toward full normalization and border stability.
