A unified power transmission line will connect substations in Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan

Asia-Plus

On March 14, Mr. Manouchehr Safarzoda, the Deputy Minister of Energy and Water Resources of Tajikistan, met in Dushanbe with Ms. Nazgul Usenova, the Deputy Minister of Energy of Kyrgyzstan, to discuss the launch of a new power transmission line as part of the regional CASA-1000 electricity transmission line project, the press center of the Ministry of Energy and Water Resources of Tajikistan (MoEWR) says.

“It was noted that in the near future, a 500 kV power transmission line between the Republic of Tajikistan and the Kyrgyz Republic will be put into operation, from the 'Sughd-500' substation in Tajikistan to the 'Datka' substation in Kyrgyzstan," the statement said.

The parties reportedly expressed confidence that mutually beneficial cooperation will continue to expand and reach a new level.

It is worth noting that the construction of the 500 kV power transmission line Datka – Sughd was carried out within the framework of the CASA-1000 project.

The Central Asia – South Asia-1000 (CASA-1000) project involves the construction of a cross-border electricity transmission line aimed at supplying electricity from Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan to Afghanistan and Pakistan.

The official launch of the CASA-1000 project took place in May 2016 in the Tajik city of Tursunzoda with the participation of the heads of state and government from the four involved countries.  The total budget for the construction of the 1,400 km long power transmission line is approximately US$1.2 billion.

An official source within a MoEWR says the Tajik and Kyrgyz parts of the project have already been completed and are ready to be connected to the regional network.  The completion of the Afghan part of the project and the start of operations are scheduled for 2026.

In accordance with the agreements between the participating countries, for 10 years after the launch of the CASA-1000 power line, deliveries from Tajikistan will be made exclusively during the summer period, from May to September.
