Mudslides and floods cause damage to roads and residents in several regions of Tajikistan

Asia-Plus

Torrential rains on April 9 caused mudslides and floods in several regions of Tajikistan, the Emergencies Committee under the Government of Tajikistan reported on April 10.

In Dushanbe, on the night of April 10, heavy rains reportedly caused flooding in the basements of three houses in Sino and Firdavsi districts.  The Committee’s rescue teams immediately arrived at the scene and used water pumps to remove the water and eliminate the consequences of the disaster.

In Hisor, at approximately 4:0 am on April 10, heavy rainfall caused a mudslide in the village of Shurob, which flooded two local residents' garden plots.

In the Roudaki district, in the village of Dara of the Rohati rural community, rainfall led to a mudslide that partially flooded the garden plots of local residents.

On April 9, in the village of Tavildara in the Sangvor district, flooding occurred due to a rise in water levels in the Gurbok River, which flooded a local resident's garden plot. Villagers were quickly evacuated to a safer location by rescuers. Monitoring of the river is ongoing, and work has begun to strengthen its banks.

Heavy rains also caused damages to districts in the Gorno Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO).

In the Rushan district, mudslides were recorded on some sections of the road from Rushan to GBAO’s capital, Khorog.   To clear the sections, three heavy engineering machines were deployed.  The affected areas were cleared, and traffic along the Dushanbe-Khorog highway was reportedly restored. Currently, work is continuing to clear the aftermath of the mudslide near the village of Vaznavd.

Additionally, rain caused mudslides in the villages of Derushon and Barushon in the Rushan district. Mud and rock masses flooded the basements of six houses in these villages.  Thirteen other mudslides occurred on road Rushan’s administrative center  to Bartang Valley.  The road is currently closed, and work to address the aftermath of the disaster is underway.

In the Ishkashim district, on April 9, mudslides occurred at the 52nd and 57th kilometers of the road passing through the Koluki settlement and the Voghzi village of the Kozidekh rural community.  Special equipment from the district road service was used to clear the debris, and by midday, the road was cleared, and traffic was restored.

In the Shugnan district, on April 9, mudslides blocked sections on the 13th and 22nd kilometers of the road between the villages of Vruzhak and Nishusp in the rural community of Gharibsho Shabozov.  The road has since been cleared, and traffic has been restored.

The Emergencies Committee noted that there have been no casualties or significant damage from the numerous mudslides.

Additionally, the Committee’s Hail Protection Service reportedly neutralized three dangerous thunderstorm fronts in the cities of Hisor and Tursunzada on the night of April 9 to 10.  The thunderstorm fronts were neutralized using 12 anti-hail shells, saving large areas of orchards and agricultural crops from hail damage.

Earlier, the Emergencies Committee informed the residents of Tajikistan that the risk of mudslides, landslides, rockfalls, and avalanches remains until April 11 due to heavy rainfall.  The Committee reminds the public to exercise caution on the roads and recommends clearing drainage ditches, reservoirs, and channels.
