Tajikistan and IRENA expand cooperation in development of renewable energy

Asia-Plus

Tajikistan’s Minister of Energy and Water Resources, Daler Juma, held a meeting with Gurbuz Gonul, Director of Country Engagement and Partnerships at the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), in Dushanbe on April 9.

The Ministry of Energy and Water Resources (MoEWR)’s press center says the two discussed key areas of cooperation, including the development of renewable energy sources (RES), implementation of joint projects, and expansion of technical collaboration.

IRENA representatives reportedly emphasized that the agency’s global goal is to triple renewable energy capacity by 2030 to 11.2 terawatts — a vital component of the international strategy to reduce carbon emissions.

During the talks, special attention was paid to Tajikistan’s reintegration into the Central Asia unified power grid, which the country rejoined in June 2024.

Participants noted that this opens new opportunities for expanding regional electricity trade, improving the efficiency of energy networks, and strengthening energy security.

Experts believe that participation in a common Central Asian energy space supports more sustainable and mutually beneficial development, and allows countries to coordinate actions within the global climate agenda.

Speaking earlier at a regional seminar in preparation for COP29, Gurbuz Gonul emphasized the importance of creating conditions to attract investments, encourage private sector participation, and enhance technical support.

“We can create an environment where investors feel confident and ‘green industrialization’ becomes a reality,” he said, stressing the need for systemic reforms in the region’s energy policy.

Following the meeting, both parties expressed readiness to further expand their partnership and highlighted the strategic importance of cooperation with IRENA for Tajikistan’s sustainable energy future and the achievement of its national climate goals.

The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) is an intergovernmental organization mandated to facilitate cooperation, advance knowledge, and promote the adoption and sustainable use of renewable energy.  It is the first international organization to focus exclusively on renewable energy, addressing needs in both industrialized and developing countries.  It was founded in 2009, and its statute entered into force on 8 July 2010. The agency is headquartered in Masdar City, Abu Dhabi.
