Kyrgyzstan has started demarcating its common border with Tajikistan, with military personnel now installing barbed wire, 24.kg reports.
The works reportedly began in the Koshmolo Ayilnoe Aiyl Okmotu of the Tork-Gul district in the Batken region of Kyrgyzstan.
Fergana news agency says the starting point of the work was marked at a strategically important location, at the junction of the borders of Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan.
The ceremony was attended online by Kamchybek Tashiyev, Deputy Prime Minister also Head of the State Committee for National Security of Kyrgyzstan (GKNB).
The first phase of the project involves installing a barbed wire fence along a 420-kilometer stretch, with the work expected to be completed by the end of 2025.
To facilitate the project, a field camp has been established in the border area, along with the delivery of specialized equipment.
Earlier, on March 13, the presidents of Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan signed a state border agreement, which led to the reopening of two previously closed border crossing points.
On March 31, in Khujand, the leaders of Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan signed an agreement on the border junction point of the three countries.
It is worth noting that after the completion of the delimitation process, the length of the Tajik-Kyrgyz border will exceed 1006 kilometers (previous reports indicated it was 970-980 km).
