Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a ceasefire during the 80th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945, Interfax reports, citing the Kremlin's Telegram channel.
“By the decision of the Supreme Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Putin, based on humanitarian considerations, during the 80th anniversary of Victory – from midnight on May 7 to May 8 until midnight on May 10 to May 11 – the Russian side declares a ceasefire. During this period, all combat operations will be stopped," the statement reads.
Russia believes that the Ukrainian side should follow this example, emphasizes the Kremlin.
Russian authorities warned that "in case of violations of the ceasefire by the Ukrainian side, the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation will respond appropriately and effectively."
At the same time, "the Russian side once again declares its readiness for peaceful negotiations without preconditions, aimed at addressing the root causes of the Ukrainian crisis and constructive cooperation with international partners."
Earlier, Vladimir Putin had announced a so-called Easter ceasefire, which was in effect from April 19 to 21. In response, Volodymyr Zelensky proposed extending the ceasefire for another 30 days if Russia was genuinely ready for a full and unconditional silence format.
Soon, Moscow and Kyiv accused each other of repeatedly violating the Easter ceasefire.
