Football legends of Tajikistan and Russia reunite for friendly match in Dushanbe

Asia-Plus

The Central Republican Stadium in Dushanbe was filled with nostalgia, applause, and a deep love for football on Wednesday, as legendary players from Tajikistan and Russia faced off in a celebratory friendly match marking World Football Day.

Despite the Russian side securing a 3:1 victory, the score was of secondary importance.  The event served as a tribute to the shared football heritage of the two nations, highlighting mutual respect and admiration between veteran players and thousands of passionate fans.

The match featured iconic players who defined football in the 1980s and 1990s.

Russia’s lineup included renowned names such as Rinat Dasayev, Yegor Titov, Dmitry Aleinichev, Valery Shmarov, Sergey Kiryakov, and Andrey Murnin.  The team was coached by Yevgeny Lovchev and Alexander Mirzoyan.

On the Tajik side, football greats such as Asliddin Habibulloyev, Rahmatullo Fuzailov, Akmal Kholmatov, Suhrob Homidov, and Rustam Khojayev took the field, with coaching support from Salohiddin Ghafourov and Hakim Fuzailov.

The event began with a show of solidarity as both teams offered support to Tajik football legend Muhsin Muhammadiyev, who is currently recovering from illness.

Played in two 30-minute halves, the match saw Oleg Divichenko open the scoring for Russia in the 14th minute, followed by a second-half goal from Andrey Murnin.  Tajikistan responded with a strike from Suhrob Homidov in the 44th minute, but the final word came just before the whistle when Russia sealed the scoreline at 3:1 — a goal initially credited to Sergey Kiryakov but later assigned to Yegor Titov.  More than 7,000 fans filled the stands, cheering enthusiastically throughout the game.  The atmosphere was described as festive and respectful, with spectators celebrating not only the goals but also the sportsmanship and camaraderie on display.

Russian team coach Yevgeny Lovchev praised the warm hospitality, stating: “This is more than a show — it’s a continuation of football life. We thank the Tajik side for their outstanding organization and for their genuine love for the game.”

Former Spartak Moscow star and UEFA Champions League winner with Porto, Dmitry Aleinichev, also expressed his admiration: “It’s my first time in Tajikistan, and I’m touched by the warmth and kindness.  Playing against legends like Habibulloyev and Khojayev is truly an honor.”

Fans took to social media and shared their emotions at the stadium, many reminiscing about the golden era of football in the 1990s.

“It felt like time travel — so many familiar faces,” one fan said.

“I was happy to bring my son. He had only heard stories about Titov and Dasayev, but today he saw them live,” another added.

The Dushanbe legends match was not just a nostalgic gathering, but a powerful reminder of football’s ability to transcend generations. With the players’ enduring skill, the audience’s unwavering enthusiasm, and the mutual respect shown on the field, the game stood as a timeless celebration of the beautiful game.
