The Branch of Innovative Road Solutions (IRS) in Tajikistan, which operates the toll on the Dushanbe-Chanak highway, has issued a public appeal for caution after a series of deadly traffic accidents in recent days.
The company expressed condolences to the families of the victims and called on all drivers to strictly observe traffic regulations, remain alert, and follow the guidance of traffic police and emergency services.
According to Interior Ministry Traffic Police Directorate, the main causes of recent crashes were loss of vehicle control, crossing into oncoming traffic, and drivers falling asleep at the wheel.
IRS representatives said additional safety measures have been implemented along the route, including the installation of warning banners and public safety announcements targeting drivers.
May 26 crash: two dead in Ayni district
One of the most recent accidents occurred on May 26 at the 66th kilometer of the Dushanbe–Khujand highway. A Mercedes-Benz driven by a resident of Pohut village veered off the road and plunged into a ravine 400 to 500 meters deep.
There were four passengers in the vehicle. Two died at the scene, while the driver and the other two passengers sustained serious injuries.
Preliminary investigations suggest the driver lost control of the vehicle. One of the victims was from Sangiston village in Ayni district and another one was from Kuhistoni-Mastchoh district.
May 15 tragedy: renowned swimming coach killed
Another fatal incident took place on May 15, claiming the life of Marina Ipaty, a well-known swimming coach. The car carrying Ipaty, her friend, and the driver also fell into a ravine along the same highway.
Marina Ipaty died on the spot. The driver remains in a coma, while her friend sustained multiple fractures.
Rising trend in road accidents
According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Tajikistan recorded 174 serious traffic accidents between January and April 2025 — 24 more than during the same period last year. In 2024, the country reported a total of 1,233 road accidents, resulting in 552 deaths and 1,353 injuries.
IRS branch has previously addressed public concerns over the lack of concrete barriers along the entirety of the Dushanbe–Khujand route, noting geographical and technical challenges.
As tragic incidents continue to highlight the dangers of mountain highways, officials are urging all motorists to prioritize safety and vigilance on the road.
