CSTO foreign ministers meet in Kyrgyzstan to address regional security

Date:

The foreign ministers of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) member states gathered in Kyrgyzstan’s resort, Cholpon-Ata, on June 30 for a high-level meeting to discuss pressing regional security issues and enhance multilateral cooperation.

Tajikistan’s Foreign Minister Sirojiddin Muhriddin led his country’s delegation at the Council of CSTO Foreign Ministers. According to Tajikistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the agenda focused on countering current threats and deepening strategic collaboration within the bloc.

The meeting concluded with the signing of several resolutions aimed at strengthening collective security.  These included joint statements on combating radicalization, terrorism, and extremism, ensuring cybersecurity, and addressing developments in the Middle East. Special attention was paid to implementing the first phase of the CSTO’s interstate program to strengthen the Tajik-Afghan border, according to the Tajik MFA information department.

The CSTO’s official website reports that in addition, issues of further cooperation between the Collective Security Treaty Organization and the Commonwealth of Independent States and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization were also discussed at the meeting.

The Foreign Ministers reportedly noted the successful implementation of the Action Plan for the celebration of the 80th anniversary of the Great Victory in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945, adopted by the CSTO Collective Security Council in November 2024.

President Japarov underscored the significance of Kyrgyzstan’s chairmanship of the CSTO, emphasizing both the responsibility and opportunity it presents to promote regional stability. He highlighted the rising threats of international terrorism, transnational crime, extremism, cyberattacks, and external interference in domestic affairs.

The Kyrgyz leader also called for coordinated action to protect critical infrastructure and strengthen information security amid growing digital threats.

The foreign ministers expressed strong support for Kyrgyzstan’s initiatives during its chairmanship and emphasized the importance of collective action in addressing contemporary challenges. They reaffirmed their commitment to multilateral dialogue, political cooperation, and coordinated stances on international issues.

Participants also stressed the need to build trust among member states and work collaboratively toward sustainable regional development.

The CSTO is a regional intergovernmental organization comprising Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, and Tajikistan, with the primary goal of protecting member states from external armed aggression.  In 2024, Armenia suspended its participation in the bloc and announced its intention to withdraw.
