Extreme heatwave expected in Tajikistan: temperatures to reach up to +47°C in some regions

Asia-Plus

Tajikistan is bracing for an intense heatwave between July 4 and 7, with forecasters warning of dangerously high temperatures across most of the country.

According to the Agency for Hydrometeorology of Tajikistan (Hydromet), a prolonged influx of dry and hot air masses is driving the surge in temperatures, which are expected to reach critical levels in several regions.

Regional forecasts: how hot will it get?

  • Khatlon province (valley areas): +42°C to +47°C
  • Districts subordinate to the center (DSC, valley areas): +39°C to +44°C
  • Sughd province (valley areas): +38°C to +43°C
  • Foothill areas: +35°C to +40°C
  • Mountainous areas: +34°C to +39°C
  • GBAO’s Darvoz district: up to +40°C–42°C
  • Dushanbe (capital): +41°C to +43°C

Authorities are also warning of an increased risk of glacial mudflows due to prolonged heat and rapid melting of snow and glaciers.  The highest risk is expected in the western areas of the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO), foothill and mountainous parts of Sughd Region, and the mountainous districts of the DSC.

Additionally, water levels in mountain rivers across GBAO, DSC, and Sughd province may rise, further increasing the potential for natural hazards.
