Kyrgyzstan has started installing barriers on the former disputed sections of the border with Tajikistan.

Date:

Kyrgyz military personnel have begun installing engineering barriers on sections of the border with Tajikistan that were previously disputed. Work is underway in the area of the Kojo Kaary pass, near the village of AkSai in Batken district and in the KattaTuz area in Leilek district, Economist reports.kg with reference to the presidential Representative Office of the Kyrgyz Republic in the Batken region.

According to the press service of the Batken region, 74 kilometers long ditches have already been dug in these areas, 68 km long metal pipes have been installed, 62 km long cables have been laid, and field roads about 90 km long have been equipped. The installation of barbed wire and other barriers has begun.

Military personnel from the State Committee for National Security, the Ministry of Defense, the Interior Ministry's internal troops, the Interior Ministry's Shumkar special regiment and employees of the Ministry of Emergency Situations in Batken region are involved in the work.

"In settlements where fences are being installed, explanatory work is being carried out with residents, the territory is being cleared of trees and shrubs. Local residents support measures to improve the border and are sympathetic to the work even near their homes," said Aibek Shamenov, Presidential Envoy to the Batken region.

It should be noted that Kyrgyzstan began demarcating the state border with Tajikistan in April in the Batken region from the junction of the borders of the Kyrgyz Republic, the Republic of Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. A field camp has been set up to ensure the work of border guards, and special equipment has been involved in engineering work.

The border agreement, signed on March 13 this year in Bishkek, completed the process of delimitation between Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan. The parties agreed on 486 kilometers of disputed territories out of the total length of the border of 1006 kilometers.

On March 31, a trilateral meeting of the Presidents of Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan was held in Khujand. The leaders signed an agreement on the junction of the borders of the three states and the Khujand Declaration of Eternal Friendship.
