How to become a grandmaster as a chess player. Another Tajik athlete has climbed a step closer to this peak.

Date:

A significant event took place in chess in Tajikistan: Mustafohuja Huseynkhodjaev fulfilled all the conditions for obtaining the title of International Master (IM). This was reported to Asia-Plus by the Chess Federation of the Republic of Tajikistan.

For three months, he competed in a series of tournaments in Europe, where he showed consistent results against strong opponents. It was in these competitions that Huseynkhodjaev increased his rating from 2,343 to 2,407 points, breaking the necessary threshold for an international title.

The last time such a result was achieved in Tajikistan was 12 years ago, when Mustafohuja's brother, Muhammad Huseynkhodjaev, became an international master.

"Now, twelve years later, the country has received another chess player with this prestigious title. Mustafa's achievement is an important step for the development of Tajik chess, which inspires a new generation of players," – the federation said.

Elo rating and its significance

The International Chess Federation (FIDE) awards titles to players based on their level of training and results. Titles are directly related to the Elo rating (a rating system in chess. – Editor's note), which reflects the strength of a chess player. The sequence is as follows:

1. Candidate for Master of Sports (KMS) – from 2000 Elo.

2. FIDE Master (FM) – from 2300 Elo.

3. International Master (IM) – from 2400 Elo and the fulfillment of three IM standards.

4. Grandmaster (GM) – from 2500 Elo and meeting three GM standards.

There is a separate line of titles for women – WFM, WIM and WGM, but the rating requirements are slightly lower there.

Defeating an opponent with a high rating brings a big boost. A draw with a favorite also gives extra points. And defeats from weak players can seriously lower the rating.

To become a grandmaster, you need to reach 2500 Elo and hold it for at least one officially fixed period.

How standards are being implemented

The title of Grandmaster (GM) is the pinnacle of a chess career, the dream of every player entering the international arena. This is not only prestige, but also recognition of a high level of skill. It is difficult to achieve such a title, but it is quite realistic if you understand the system of grades, ratings and standards, as well as be inspired by the examples of those who have passed this path.

To get the title of grandmaster, you must meet three GM standards – to show high results in official tournaments approved by FIDE. Basic conditions:

– Chess players from at least three countries must participate in the tournament.

– There must be players with IM and GM titles among the competitors.

– You need to score a certain number of points against highly rated opponents.

– The average "tournament performance" should be at least 2600 Elo.

It usually takes from one to three years to meet all the requirements, but it all depends on the frequency of participation in international tournaments.

How many tournaments do you need to become a GM

On average, it takes 5-8 years of active international practice to achieve a title:

– Participation in at least 15-20 tournaments per year.

– Playing with strong opponents, rather than choosing weak tournaments for quick points.

– Constant work on the opening theory, tactical vision and endgame technique.

Young talents often reach the title by the age of 15-17, but most grandmasters achieve success closer to the age of 22-25.

Psychology and training

High-level chess is not only about combinations and strategy, but also the ability to keep pressure on. On the way to GM, athletes need to:

– work with trainers and analysts;

– use modern chess engines for deep analysis;

– sort out your own games and look for ways to improve the game.

Today, computer technology accelerates the development of chess players, but the habit of daily work and the ability to deal with fatigue and setbacks remain important.

A goal achievable by labor

The title of grandmaster is a combination of talent, discipline and experience. Today, there are about 1,750 active GMS in the world, and it is extremely honorable to get into this elite circle.

For Tajik chess players, the example of Farrukh Amonatov (a chess player from Tajikistan, who became a grandmaster in 2002 and remains the only representative of the country to reach this peak) and the achievements of the Huseynkhodjaevs brothers serve as an incentive to move on. The next goal is new grandmasters who will represent the country on the world stage.
