Japan and Tajikistan sign two grant agreements worth $228,000

Asia-Plus

On November 11, Japan and Tajikistan signed two grant agreements to support new social projects. The documents were signed by the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to Tajikistan, Ms. Keiko Furuta, and representatives of the beneficiary organizations. The total amount of the grants provided by the Government of Japan is $228,699.

Both projects are funded under the Government of Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) program.

The first project — the construction of a new school in the village of Vahdat, Tojikobod district — received funding in the amount of $128,739. The contract was signed on the Tajik side by the Chairman of the Tajikabad district, Qadriddin Faqerzoda.

The second project aims to upgrade medical equipment at the Central Hospital of the city of Istiqlol. It was allocated $99,960. The agreement was signed by Valinazar Ghoibov, Director of the Central Hospital.

Ambassador Keiko Furuta noted that for more than 30 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations, Japan has supported Tajikistan as a gesture of friendship and partnership. Special attention has been given to education and healthcare, which are key areas of bilateral cooperation.

Ms. Furuta expressed hope that both projects will be successfully implemented on time and will bring real benefits to the population, particularly to those affected by the devastating earthquake in April this year. She also emphasized that these initiatives aim to improve the quality and safety of social institutions in the country, thereby contributing to the overall well-being of the population.

The project beneficiaries expressed their gratitude to the government and people of Japan for their assistance and support.

The GGP program mainly provides support to local authorities, educational and medical institutions, and international NGOs in developing countries. Since 1996, Japan has implemented 470 humanitarian projects in Tajikistan through GGP, totaling $39.2 million.
