Kremlin: no Ukraine compromise reached yet after high-level U.S. talks

Asia-Plus

Russian President Vladimir Putin held a five-hour meeting in the Kremlin with U.S. presidential envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, son-in-law of President Donald Trump, to discuss a Washington-proposed plan for ending the war in Ukraine.

According to Russian officials, the meeting, which began three hours behind schedule, ended at approximately 12:30 a.m. Moscow time. Putin was joined by his aide Yuri Ushakov and Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF) head Kirill Dmitriev.

Ushakov said the discussions focused on several documents sent earlier by the U.S., including the original peace proposal and four supplementary papers. “We did not analyze specific wording but rather focused on the essence of the proposals,” he stated.

Some of the U.S. ideas were viewed positively, while others drew criticism from Moscow. “There is no compromise solution yet, but discussions will continue,” Ushakov said.

He added that “specific territorial issues” were addressed, stressing that these cannot be ignored in efforts to resolve the conflict.

The U.S. delegation conveyed personal greetings and best wishes to Putin from Donald Trump. In return, Putin sent a “friendly greeting” and several key political messages to Trump via Witkoff.

Both sides reportedly expressed willingness to maintain dialogue. A potential meeting between Putin and Trump, according to Ushakov, will depend on the progress made in future negotiations.

By mutual agreement, the content of the discussions remains confidential.
