Following a series of avalanche caused by recent heavy snowfalls, the situation in the Gorno Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO) remains complex, and its capital, the city of Khorog, still remains in snow captivity.

According Kishvarsho Navrouzshoyev the director of the Khorog hydrometeorology agency, 55 centimeters of snow fell in the region last Saturday.

Warmer temperatures have increased the risk of further avalanches in the region within the next few days, Navrouzshoyev added.

Meanwhile, the GBAO emergency management agency noted on January 30 that avalanches caused by recent snowfalls have blocked practically all roads from Khorog.

An avalanche that hit the Nivodak area of Khorog blocked the roads from Khorog to Ishkashim and Roshtqala districts.

Avalanches also blocked in some places the Dushanbe-Khorog highway in the Darvoz district.

Besides, an avalanche blocked the road from Khorog to Murgab district near the village of Barsem, some 15 kilometers of Khorog, the GBAO emergencies official said, noting that heavy snowfalls in some areas of the region severed communications between the districts of Gorno Badakhshan.

According to the GBAO emergency management agency, woman from Ishkashim district Davlatsulton Zulfiqorbekova and border guard Shohqosim Sodmonbekov were killed by an avalanche that occurred in Ishkashim district on Saturday.  The body of the border guard has not yet been found.

Work on clearing roads of snow is reportedly going on.
