DUSHANBE, November 26, 2012, Asia-Plus  — The Independent Center for Protection of Human Rights has completed training for lawyers on providing practical legal advice to torture victims.

The training has been conducted under support of Tajik Branch of Open Society Institute/Assistance Foundation (OSI/AF-Tajikistan) within the framework of the program, Fight against Torture and Impunity in Tajikistan.

“During four months, five lawyers have taken the training course,” said the project coordinator Sergey Romanov.  “They have studied international and national standards of freedom from torture, specifics of providing legal advice to torture victims and protecting their interests (interviewing, types of legal actions, strategic defense).  The lawyers also had an opportunity to get acquainted with activities of organizations dealing with rehabilitation of torture victims.”

Similar training courses for lawyers from the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO) will start in Dushanbe within the next few days, he added.
