Eight dead in Moscow market blast

DUSHANBE, August 21, Asia-Plus – An explosion has killed eight people – including at least two children – at a Moscow market, the Russian news agency RIA Novosti cited Moscow Prosecutor Yuri Syomin as saying.

At least 40 other people were injured in blast at 10:30 a.m. at local time at the eastern Cherkizov market.  It brought down a two-storey building.

According to senior officials from the Moscow mayor’s office, a makeshift explosive device blew up.  Latest reports from Moscow police say a bomb had been hidden in a bag and left in a cafe.  The Prosecutor General”s Office said the bomb that detonated at the Cherkizov market was equivalent to 1.5 kilograms of TNT.

RIA Novosti reports commercial turf war main version of Moscow market blast. Rival criminal gangs in Moscow occasionally plant small bombs at markets.

The Cherkizov market is used mostly by traders from China and the Far East or from Central Asia’s states.

We will recall that a major part of Tajik labor migrants staying in Moscow are working at this market.
