DUSHANBE, December 20, 2012, Asia-Plus — In a statement delivered at an enlarged meeting of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) Council in Moscow, Tajik President Emomali Rahmon yesterday called on the CSTO member nations to establish and expand cooperation with Afghan law enforcement authorities in combating terrorism, extremism and drug trafficking, the Tajik president’s official website noted.
The CSTO summit reportedly highly appraised Tajikistan’s experience in training personnel for Afghan power wielding structures and its support for reconstruction of Afghanistan’s economy.
The CSTO heads of state paid a special attention to the issue of providing support to Tajikistan for enhancement of control of its common border with Afghanistan, the source said.
The December 19 summit was reportedly one of the most effective meetings of the CSTO heads of state.
On Wednesday, President Rahmon also participated in a session of the Interstate Council of the Eurasian Economic Community (EAEC) in Moscow.
The EAEC Interstate Council reportedly considered the process of implementation of the EAEC plans to mitigate effects of the global financial crisis and improve work of the Eurasian Development Bank (EDB).
Speaking a the meeting, Tajik leader, in particular, noted that two agreements – on legal status of labor migrants and their families and on countering illegal labor migration – that took effect in member countries of the Customs Union (Belarus, Kazakhstan and Russia) should also take into consideration interests of Tajikistan, which can join the Customs Union in the future, the Tajik president’s website said.
