DUSHANBE, October 24, 2008, Asia-Plus  – The United Nations celebrates its 63rd anniversary today.

On October 24 1945, delegates from 50 countries met in San Francisco, United States, to sign a document of historical importance which has come to be known as the United Nations Charter which founded the World’s Organization.

As a result, October 24 celebrated worldwide every year marks the day when a sufficient number of ratifications were gathered to officially establish the organization.

UN organization is divided into several bodies: the General Assembly where all the member States are represented; the Security Council which issues resolutions in favor of peace and security; the Economic and Social Council which works for the promotion of economic and social cooperation as well as development and the Secretariat which deals with the day-to-day business in the UN.

By virtue of its charter, the UN is endeavoring to make itself a place where a bright future for all will be built, through its five goals: To keep the peace and security in the world; to promote friendly relations between nations; to foster international cooperation on all subjects when necessary; to be a center where nations’ efforts are harmonized for common objectives and to oversee intangibility of borders.

More than 10 agencies of the United Nations are currently active in Tajikistan.  The UN has made a great contribution to reestablishment of peace and accord in Tajikistan in the 1990s as well as to reduction of poverty, enhancement of education and health sectors, etc.  Over the past three years, the United Nations has mobilized more than US$50 million to Tajikistan, making shift from providing humanitarian aid to promoting the country’s development.
