U.S. President Donald Trump stated that Washington held “very good” talks with Tehran. According to him, the parties “quite possibly” may soon reach an agreement and resolve the conflict. According to Deutsche Welle (DW)’s Russian Service, the U.S. President said this at a press conference in the White House on May 6.

Trump reportedly n0oted that the negotiation process, in his view, is developing successfully, but warned: if the US does not achieve its goals, Washington will have to “take a big step further.” At the same time, as Trump emphasized, Iran is interested in a deal.

The American president also claims that Tehran agreed to the key US demand to abandon the development of nuclear weapons. The US president also indicated that the 30-day deadline for reaching an agreement, mentioned by American media, is not rigid. Answering journalists’ questions, he stated that “there are no deadlines.”

The Iranian authorities have not yet commented on this statement.

Trump has previously stated that Iran allegedly agreed never to possess nuclear weapons and to accept “other conditions.” However, his administration still reveals little about the content of the negotiations, although Trump and other American officials regularly speak about their successful progress.

Despite the White House continuing to allow the “force option” for solving the problem, Washington publicly expresses confidence that it will not come to that.

Earlier, Axios, citing sources in the White House, wrote that the US and Iran are close to signing a “one-page memorandum of understanding.” The document is meant to be a peace agreement between the parties and a basis for further negotiations. The memorandum provides for a 30-day negotiation period during which the parties must agree on additional arrangements regarding the Strait of Hormuz, the Iranian nuclear program, and American sanctions. The White House expects Iran to sign the document by the end of the week.

The Iranian authorities stated that they are studying the US proposal to end the war and will soon deliver a response through Pakistan, acting as a mediator between Washington and Tehran.
