Heavy rains that caused a rockslide led to the death of four workers at the Shugnov gold mine in the Khavaling district of Khatlon province. The incident occurred on May 23. Local authorities reported the details for the first time.

On May 25, the first deputy head of the Khavaling district, Vali Tabarzoda, told Asia-Plus that during gold mining, a landslide occurred due to heavy rains, and the rock collapsed on the workers.

He named the deceased:

– Rahmiddin Gadoyev, 19 years old, resident of the Abdurahmoni-Jomi district;

– Alisherpour Mirmahmadzoda, 21 years old, resident of the Roudaki district;

– Saymurod Saidov, 42 years old, resident of the Jaloliddini-Balkhi district;

– Umarali Zabirov, 46 years old, resident of the Abdurahmoni-Jomi district;

Mr. Tabarzoda said the bodies of the deceased had been found and handed over to their families.

“The bodies of three of them were found on May 24, and the body of another one was discovered on the morning of May 25. Two of them were truck drivers, one was an excavator driver, and another worked as a welder. At the time of the incident, they were engaged in work inside the machinery,” Tabarzoda said.

An official source within the Emergencies Committee’s office in the Khatlon province told Asia-Plus that the accident occurred around 10 a.m. on May 23, when a rock collapsed on four gold mine workers during the processing of first-grade gold. The source also noted that the accident occurred due to heavy rain and soil softening.

“The Industrial and Mining Safety Control Service is checking the causes of the accident. The prosecutor’s office is investigating the accident,” the Emergencies Committee management reported.

In the Shugnov jamoat (rural municipality) of the Khavaling district, there is one of the largest gold mining sites in Tajikistan. Currently, several companies are engaged in gold mining here. Many workers come here to earn money from other regions of the country.

It should be noted that this is not the first accident at mines and shafts in Tajikistan in recent years. On January 17, 2025, three employees of the Fon-Yaghnob coal mine were killed due to a collapse of stones and sand in the Ayni district, Sughd province.

According to the State Supervisory Service for Industrial and Mining Supervision of the Republic of Tajikistan, a total of 46 accidents and one industrial accident were registered at industrial enterprises and mining facilities in 2025, resulting in 40 deaths and 27 injuries.
