New rise in prices of basic food products reported in Gorno Badakhshan

Date:

KHOROG, September 29, 2008, Asia-Plus – A new rise in prices of basic food products has been reported in Gorno Badakhshan.

Speaking in an interview with the Khorog news agency Pamir Media, Latif Shozodayev, deputy head of the GBAO economy development and antimonopoly directorate said that the price of one kilogram of sugar has risen from 2.8 somoni in June to 3.00 somoni, rice – from 3.4 to 6 somoni and vegetable oil – from 8 to 10 somoni per liter.

Shozodayev said that the price hike had resulted from the rising cost of these products in Dushanbe, which provides the bulk of GBAO’s food deliveries, and rising transportation fees.

In the meantime, prices of food products being produced inside the region itself have also risen over the past three months.  The price of one kilogram of meat on Khorog’s market is now 12-14 somoni, one kilogram of potatoes and cabbages currently costs up to 2 somoni and the price of one kilogram of tomatoes is now up to 2.5 somoni.  The GBAO official attributes rise in prices of local basic food products to activity of resellers.
