Tajikistan joins UN Convention against Corruption

DUSHANBE, October 13, Asia-Plus — Tajikistan has joined the United

Nations Convention against Corruption, according to the UNDP Country Office.

A source at the UNDP Country Office in Dushanbe said that the Government of Tajikistan signed the UN Convention against Corruption in New York on September 25.

”No society or state is able to tackle this problem on its own, said the source. “Signing the convention demonstrates Tajikistan’s resolve to deal with this problem.”

”State Parties have already taken some steps such as the return of properties of some officials, prevention of money laundry, prosecuting those found guilty of corruption, strengthening accountability and improving audit standards in the private sector,” the source noted.

The text of the United Nations Convention against Corruption was negotiated during seven sessions of the Ad Hoc Committee for the Negotiation of the Convention against Corruption, held between January 21 2002 and October 1 2003. The convention was adopted by the General Assembly by resolution 58/4 of October 31 2003.
