Tajik MoA offers opening UN FAO office in Tajikistan

DUSHANBE, September 15, 2008, Asia-Plus  — On Friday September 12, the Minister of Agriculture, Qosim Qosimov, met with visiting Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations (UN FAO) Representative, Mr. Tsukasa Kimoto.

According to press service of the Ministry of Agriculture (MoA), in the course of the talks, two discussed issues related to joint programs being implemented in Tajikistan and aimed at pest control, provision of high-quality seeds to farming units, protection of crops and livestock as well as enhancement of agrarian sector in Tajikistan. 

During the meeting, Mr. Kimoto noted FAO currently works in 75 countries and Tajikistan stands in the 30th place among them in terms of the volumes of financing.

The minister expressed gratitude for FAO’s support for combating pests and pointed to the necessity setting up joint working groups.   

Qosimov and Kimoto agreed to continue coordinating import of high-quality seeds by various structures, including international organizations; fair distribution and accurate execution of agronomic works.  They also considered establishment of the Technical Coordination Council at a MoA.  The activity of the Council will have a recommendatory character and will create favorable conditions for more exact statistics on crops in country, the minister said.

According to Narzullo Dadaboyev, a spokesman for the MoA, the minister also proposed to open the country office of UN FAO in Tajikistan for joint solution of problems facing Tajikistan’s agrarian sector.  The ministry intends to apply to the government and the MFA for support, the spokesman said.
