DUSHANBE, July 6, 2014, Asia-Plus – The authorities of the northern city of Panjakent have reportedly shut down local office of the Islamic Revival Party (IRP).
“In early June, local authorities stated that the building of the of the office of the IRP organization in Panjakent is liable to demolition since the building is located at the municipal road, but when it turned out that reconstruction of the road will not apply to the office, they stated that the office was allegedly registered as sales outlet, therefore, it should used according to its intended purpose,” an official source at the IRP organization for Sughd told Asia-Plus in an interview.
We will recall that IRP’s official website reported on June 6 that the Panjakent authorities partially demolished the building on June 5 and they promised to allot a land plot to IRP’s organization within the city boundaries.
Founded in October 1990, the Islamic Revival Party of Tajikistan was registered on December 4, 1991. It was banned by the Supreme Court in June 1993 and legalized in August 1999. Its official newspaper is
Najot
(Salvation). According to some sources, IRP now has more than 40,000 members. It won two seats in the 2010 parliamentary elections. The Islamic Revival Party of Tajikistan is the only Islamic party registered in CIS Central Asia. Current chairman of the IRP is Muhiddin Kabiri.
The party has two seats in the Majlisi Namoyandagon (Tajikistan’s lower chamber of parliament) – Muhiddin Kabiri and Saidumar Huseini; both of them came to the parliament from the party list.
