DUSHANBE, July 21, 2014, Asia-Plus — The Central Commission for Elections and Referenda (CCER) endorsed the regulations on the procedure of testing knowledge of parliamentary candidates of state language at the end of last week.

“Specialists from the Faculties of Law and the Committee on the State Language and Terminology under the Government of Tajikistan have been got involved in the work on the regulations,” Abdumannon Dodoyev, the head of the CCER’s office, told Asia-Plus in an interview.

According to him, candidates to the parliament (Majlisi Oli) must write their biographies, read one-page text in Tajik and undergo an interview in the presence of the commission members, while candidates to regional, city and district legislatures will only undergo an interview in Tajik.

Under Tajikistan’s election legislation, the date for parliamentary elections is established no later than 75 days before the end of the term of the parliament.  The term of the Majlisi Namoyandagon (Tajikistan’s lower chamber of parliament) expires on February 28, 2015.  Elections to the upper house (Majlisi Milli) of parliament will be carried out 25 days after elections to the Majlisi Namoyandagon.
