DUSHANBE, September 8, 2014, Asia-Plus — President Emomali Rahmon has congratulated the people of Tajikistan on the 23rd anniversary of Tajikistan’s Independence, which is marked on September 9.

“Over the past 23 years, we have got over many difficulties and obstacles and managed to provide sustainable development of our country and strengthen its positions on international arena,” Emomali Rahmon said in his televised address.

In his address, the president, in particular, noted that “under conditions of modern world with its realities and threats, protection of the state independence of Tajikistan and its achievements is the duty of each citizen of the country.”

“The state independence and the national unity are the powerful wings that ensure high flight for our country,” Rahmon stressed.

The main celebrations dedicated to Tajikistan’s Independence Day will take place in the Tajik capital tomorrow.

The history of the Tajiks extends well over a 1000 year into the past, though there was never a formal state called Tajikistan until 9 September 1991.  Having gained its independence in 1991, Tajikistan experienced a five-year civil war and several changes in government in 1992-1997.  Signing of a peace agreement put an end to the fighting.  Since that time, Tajikistan has come a long way in consolidating peace and stability. The process of its implementation has opened a new page in the development of the country.  Tajikistan has demonstrated a firm commitment to stability and has made substantial progress in peace building.  In 1999 Tajiks marked the 1100 anniversary of Samanid Empire, which became a symbol of cohesion for public and political forces.  Thirteen years ago, in September 2001, Tajikistan marked 10 years of independence with celebrations, concerts, national conferences, and speeches from political leaders in Dushanbe and throughout the country.
