DUSHANBE, September 10, 2014, Asia-Plus — Official talks began here on Wednesday between Tajik President Emomali Rahmon and his Iranian counterpart Hassan Rouhani at the Palace of Nation (Kokhi Millat).
The two presidents are to attend a joint press conference at the end of their meeting.
Prior to the meeting with his Tajik counterpart, the Iranian President was officially welcomed by President Rahmon at the Palace of Nation.
Iran’s IRNA reports that Tajikistan is the second leg of President Rouhani’s five-day regional tour, which had earlier taken him to Kazakhstan where he visited for the first time since he took office in August 2013.
While in Astana, President Rouhani discussed issues of mutual interests with his Kazak counterpart
President Rouhani is accompanied by a high-ranking political and economic delegation including a number of his cabinet members.
The Iranian and Tajik delegations are expected to sign a number of agreements on bilateral cooperation.
According to the Tajik MFA information department, a trilateral meeting of the presidents of Tajikistan, Iran and Afghanistan will take place in Dushanbe on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit.
While in Tajikistan, President Rouhani is also scheduled to hold talks with Majlisi Namoyandagon (Tajikistan’s lower chamber of parliament) Speaker Shukurjon Zuhurov and Tajik Prime Minister Qohir Rasoulzoda.
On September 11, Iranian president will meet representatives of Tajik scientific community and on September 12, Hassan Rouhani will attend a summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO). Iran has observer status in the SCO.
The second unit of the Sangtuda-2 hydroelectric power (HPP) is expected to be unveiled during Rouhani’s visit to Tajikistan.
