DUSHANBE, May 25, 2015, Asia-Plus — The dollar (USD) has lost nearly 2.5 percent in its value against the Tajik national currency, the somoni (TJS), in Dushanbe since May 22.

On May 22, the market buying and selling rates of USD against TJS were 1:6.52 and 1:6.54 respectively.

Today, the market buying and selling rates of USD against TJS in Dushanbe are 1:6.40 and 1:6.42 respectively.

According to data from the National bank of Tajikistan, TJS last year lost 10 percent in its value against USD.  Since the beginning of this year, TJS has reportedly lost nearly 20 percent in its value against USD.

We will recall that Tajik central bank suspended operations of currency-exchange points belonging to physical entities in the country on April 17.  The blanket ban on private exchange offices means more than half of the country’s exchange offices – 818 out of a total 1,581 – are being shuttered, leaving 763 operating.  This month, 355 of those shattered private exchange offices have resumed their activities as exchange offices of lending institutions.
