DUSHANBE, June 14, 2016, Asia-Plus – Visiting Director of the Regional Bureau for Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States (RBEC) of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Ms. Ayse Cihan Sultanoglu, yesterday met here with Tajik Prime Minister Qohir Rasoulzoda.

According to the Prime Minister Secretariat, the two sides discussed state and prospects of cooperation between Tajikistan and the United Nations Development Programme.

They reportedly noted that bilateral cooperation based on priority programs and socioeconomic strategies meets interests of both sides.

Ms. Ayse Cihan Sultanoglu appreciated Tajik government’s support for development of bilateral relations and readiness for further expansion of cooperation in all priority fields, the source said.

Monday afternoon, UNDP RBEC director held talks with Tajik Foreign Minister Sirojiddin Aslov.

The Tajik MFA information department reports the two discussed issues related to cooperation between Tajikistan and UNDP, including development and adoption of a new development strategy of Tajikistan for period until 2030 and the High-Level Symposium on Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 6 and Targets: Insuring that No One Is Left Behind in Access to Water and Sanitation that will take place in Dushanbe from August 9-11, this year.

The Symposium offers a platform for government officials, water policy makers and experts, businesses and civil society representatives to discuss how to implement SDG 6 and its related targets, including through an international decade of water for sustainable development, currently under consultation initiated by Tajikistan.

Ms. Ayse Cihan Sultanoglu (Turkey) is the Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations; and Assistant Administrator and Director of the Regional Bureau for Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States (RBEC) of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).  She was appointed to this position by the UN Secretary-General in April 2012.

The Regional Bureau for Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States (RBEC) administers the UNDPs programs in Central and Eastern Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), playing an important role in the transition process through empowering people, organizations and governments to promote sustainable human development.

Working under a mandate issued by the UN Secretary-General, RBEC began the process of establishing offices and programs in the CIS states in 1992.  Today, of the 30 program countries in the RBEC region, there are UNDP country offices in 23 of them: Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Yugoslavia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, Lithuania, The Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Moldova, Poland, Romania, Russian Federation, Tajikistan, Turkey, Turkmenistan, Ukraine and Uzbekistan.
