Barqi Tojik (Tajikistan’s national integrated power company) says they raise rates in order to maintain the country’s power system in a working order.
A statement released by Barqi Tojik, in particular, notes that electricity prices will rise on average 16.5 percent beginning on November 1, 2016.
They reportedly raise electricity prices also in order to recoup investments they are making to rehabilitate operating hydropower plants and power transmission lines. Besides, they pay royalty fees for use of water by hydropower plants. Every year, Barqi Tojik reportedly pays 35 million somoni in royalty fees.
Tajikistan is expected to raise electricity rates beginning on November 1 this year. The government decrees to set new electricity rates for all categories of consumers, except the Tajik Aluminum Company (TALCO).
The new prices will be 14.65 dirams (16.2 percent increase compared to the current price of 1 kWh of electricity for residential customers) for residential customers, 35.65 dirams for industrial and non-industrial enterprises, 14.20 dirams for federally funded institutions, public utilities and sports complexes, 2.55 dirams in April-September and 9.55 dirams in October-March for pumping stations for mechanized irrigation and repair-and-production bases of the Agency for Land Reclamation and Irrigation under the Government of Tajikistan, and 2.55 dirams for vertical drainage wells and land reclamation pumping stations.
Commercial enterprises will pay 88.30 dirams for use of electric power to operate electric boilers and electric equipment to provide their premises with hot water and heating, and federally funded institutions will pay 26.10 dirams for the same purposes.
For the last time, Tajikistan raised electricity rates on July 1, 2014.
