DUSHANBE, January 18, Asia-Plus — In 2007, 4,334 divorce cases were registered in Tajikistan, which is 1,576 cases more than in the previous year (in 2006, 2,758 divorces were registered in the country), Mehrinisso Nosirova, chairperson of the Committee for Family and Women’s Affairs, announced at a news conference in Dushanbe on January 18.
She added that divorces had become more frequent among young families. She named labor migration as one of factors that contribute to increase in the number o divorce cases in the country.
“Going to other countries in search of better employment opportunities, our men frequently forget their families and children left in Tajikistan,” she said, noting that early marriages are also one of reasons for divorce.
According to her, families are disintegrating because girls who are married off straight after finishing school are not ready for family life.
Ms. Nosirova also noted that the law on the order of observing national traditions and rituals that had promoted increase in the number of marriages. According to her, the number of marriages increased from 507,037 cases in 2006 to 746,000 cases in 2007.
