DUSHANBE, January 11, Asia-Plus — US energy company AES, which had earlier intended to participate in implementation of a number of energy projects in Tajikistan, has temporarily suspended its activity here, according to the AES office in Dushanbe.
The source at the AES Dushanbe Office said that the company had suspended its activity in Tajikistan following instruction given from the AES Headquarters.
He noted that the reason for suspension of company’s activity in the country would become clear after a visit of AES top managers to Tajikistan in the second half of this month. The source added that the company had not had any problems in Tajikistan.
Last year, AES signed an agreement with the Tajik side on construction of a 1,000 megawatt thermal power plant at the Fon-Yaghnob coal field in northern Tajikistan.
We will recall that AES President and Chief Executive Officer Paul Hanrahan visited Dushanbe in May 2006.
On May 24, 2006, he held talks with President Emomali Rahmon to discuss cooperation issues. The two discussed a number of investment projects in the energy sector, namely; the construction of the power-transmission line from Tajikistan to Afghanistan and Pakistan as well as the construction of new hydropower plants in Tajikistan. The also exchanged views on creation of international energy consortium for developing Tajikistan’s water and energy resources.
Founded in 1981, AES built its first power plant in 1985 in Texas, which was also one of the first competitive power plants in the United States.
