Tajik President Emomali Rahmon yesterday evening left for Baku, Azerbaijan on an official visit, according to the Tajik president’s official website.

Foreign Minister, Presidential Adviser for International Issues, Minister of Economic Development and Trade, Minister of Industry and New Technologies, Minister of Education and Science, Prosecutor-General, Head of the State Committee on Investments and State-owned Property Management, Head of the Committee for Food Security, Head of the Committee for TV and Radio-broadcasting and some other officials are accompanying Tajik leader on his visit to Azerbaijan.   

Azeri media reports say a guard of honor was arranged for the Tajik President at the Heydar Aliyev International Airport decorated with the national flags of the two countries.  President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon was welcomed by Azerbaijani First Deputy Prime Minister Yagub Eyyubov, Deputy FM Nadir Huseynov and other officials.

The Tajik president’s official website says that during his visit, Emomali Rahmon will hold talks with senior Azeri state officials to discuss state and prospects of further expansion of bilateral cooperation between Tajikistan and Azerbaijan.  

A source in the Tajik government says Emomali Rahmon will hold talks with his Azeri counterpart Ilham Aliyev, Azeri Prime Minister Novruz Mammadov and Azeri Parliament Speaker Ogtay Asadov.

The previous visit of Emomali Rahmon to Baku that took place in July 2012 resulted in signing of 10 cooperation documents.   

Diplomatic relations between Tajikistan and Azerbaijan were established on May 29, 1992.  Since the establishment of diplomatic relations, bilateral and multilateral relations of Tajikistan with Azerbaijan have been developing in the spirit of mutual respect.  Tajikistan and Azerbaijan are partners at the international level in the framework of organizations such as UN, OSCE and CIS.

Current legal foundation of Tajikistan-Azerbaijan bilateral cooperation includes more than 30 agreements and treaties.
