DUSHANBE, April 15, 2009, Asia-Plus — The Government of Canada is pleased to mark its contribution of nearly $20,000 CAD in support of the “Umedbakhsh” project being implemented by the non governmental organization (NGO) Center for Democracy Development, press release issued by the Canadian Embassy on April 14 said.
The establishment of a bakery in Khujand will facilitate the training and employment of fifteen women – graduates from boarding school for the blind.
The Government of Canada is a major donor in the area of human rights and gender equality, and is pleased to contribute to the “Umedbakhsh” project. The Canadian contribution was used primarily to purchase bakery equipment. This project provides sustainable employment, but also supplies fresh bread to kindergartens and orphanages on a daily basis.
Mrs. Margaret Skok, Ambassador of Canada to the Republic of Tajikistan, the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Kyrgyz Republic stated, “Canada is pleased to support the work of the Center through which the establishment of the bakery raises awareness of the rights of women and handicapped persons, and will produce concrete improvements in the quality of life of the participants through new skills development.”
