KHUJAND, June 21, Asia-Plus – A seminar was held in Khujand on June 20 as part of the Urban Institute  (UI) “Creation of Local-Level Understanding and Cooperation: Role of Media” Project.

The seminar brought together representatives of local authorities and media from Khujand, Konibodom, Chkalovsk, Isrtaravshan and Mastchoh.

Zilya Shomahmadova, a senior specialist with the UI CO in Tajikistan, said that the seminar had considered issues related to promoting development of cultural interaction between organs of state power, which are participants of the decentralization process and responsible for achievement of democratic management on the local level, and the population for providing efficient cooperation.

According to her, the main objective of the seminar was to discuss ways how to raise role of media in providing this cooperation.

The Urban Institute’s primary strategic task in Tajikistan is to assist local governments to improve their effectiveness through training and their responsiveness to citizens by taking more initiative and assuming a leadership role in community-based partnerships.  UI emphasizes information exchange in order to re-orient local attitudes toward local government.  The Urban Institute supports decentralization in Tajikistan through a range of support activities to educate and orient a wide array of officials and third sector representatives to basic concepts of local government.
