Tajik leader discusses water, climate, and global security issues with UN Deputy Secretaries-General

The parties paid special attention to the "Dushanbe Water Process," parliamentary diplomacy, and the peaceful resolution of conflicts.

On May 25, the President of Tajikistan, Emomali Rahmon, held meetings in Dushanbe with representatives of the UN and the Secretary-General of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, who arrived in the country to participate in the Fourth High-Level International Conference on the International Decade for Action “Water for Sustainable Development, 2018–2028”. This was reported by the press service of the head of state.

Emomali Rahmon received a group of UN Deputy Secretaries-General. The meeting was attended by UN Deputy Secretary-General and Executive Secretary of ESCAP Armida Salsiah Alisjahbana, UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Water Resources Retno Marsudi, as well as the Rector of the United Nations University and UN Deputy Secretary-General Tshilidzi Marwala.

During the negotiations, the parties discussed Tajikistan’s cooperation with the UN, including support for the republic’s initiatives in the fields of water resources and climate; transport and logistics; sustainable energy; agriculture; digitalization and green technologies.

It was noted that on Tajikistan’s initiative, 14 UN resolutions have already been adopted in the field of water resources.

Rahmon thanked the guests for participating in the conference and supporting the Dushanbe Water Process. The meeting participants expressed confidence that the current conference will become an important international platform for the development of water diplomacy and finding solutions on water resources and climate change issues.

Special attention was paid by the parties to cooperation with the United Nations University and expanding scientific and practical connections of Tajik specialists with the international academic community.

The Role of Parliamentary Diplomacy in Solving Global Problems

On the same day, the President of Tajikistan held negotiations with the Secretary-General of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, Martin Chungong. The parties discussed issues of Tajikistan’s cooperation with this international organization.

Rahmon welcomed Martin Chungong’s participation in the conference and noted the active cooperation of the Inter-Parliamentary Union with Tajikistan on issues of water resources and climate change.

During the meeting, it was emphasized that the Inter-Parliamentary Union serves as an important platform for promoting peaceful initiatives and finding solutions to global problems.

Special attention was paid by the parties to the role of parliamentary diplomacy in strengthening relations between countries, including issues of transparency, democratic principles, sustainable development, and international cooperation.

Also, during the conversation, peaceful ways of resolving modern global conflicts were discussed.
