DUSHANBE, February 1, Asia-Plus — Tajikistan’s Internet provider Eastera is going to offer new service to its customers – video call on fixed line, according to Eastera’s technical service.

A source at the company’s technical service said that this service will be provided on the basis of the Next Generation Network (NGN), and a caller can place a video call on a fixed line who has a video-enabled POTS telephone.

NGN is a packet-based network, offering unrestricitng access by users to diferent service providers.  The general idea behind NGN is that one network transports all information and services (voice, data, and all sorts of media such as video) by encapsulating these into packets, like it is on the Internet.

According to the surce, Eastera was granted a license for providing NGN-based services, including high-spped access to Internet, IP telephony, video conference (video call) and so forth last year.

“The test period of NGN-telephony has already been completed and we are already working with several subscribers, providing vide call on fixed line,” the source said, adding that the payment rates will worked out already in February.

According to State Communications Oversight and Regulatory Service at the Ministry of Transport and Communications (MoTC), at present three companies, Babilon T, Telecom Technology and Eastera, offer NGN services in the country.

According to Babilon T, which was first in Tajikistan to offer NGN services in late 2005 already, they are currently rendering NGN services to some 2,000 customers, including organizations and private individuals.
