DUSHANBE, December 19, Asia-Plus – Experts from the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade (MoEDT) expect prices of some food products to rise at least by 20-25 percent in the threshold of the New Year holidays.
A source at a MoEDT said that the high prices may possibly remain in effect after the holidays as well. According to him, the price hikes are a result of rising prices of fuel and many other factors. “Some entrepreneurs have used the situation, unfoundedly raising the prices,” the source said.
According to the MoEDT, prices of some basic food products have already risen on average by 10-15 percent since the beginning of December. Thus, the price of one 50-kilogram of sack of wheat flour has risen from 50 simonies to 60 simonies.
Since the marked economic has not been formed completely in Tajikistan, the population hopes for support of the government,” the source said, noting that state bodies do not control prices on the markets.
“However, if the situation deteriorate and prices continue to rise, authorities may interfere and use their reserves to decrease the prices on the markets,” the source stressed.
