DUSHANBE, March 28, 2009, Asia-Plus  – Issues related to impact of the global financial crisis on Tajikistan’s economy were discussed at a meeting of Finance Minister Safarali Najmuddinov with Mr. Peter Siegenthaler, Director of the Federal Finance Administration, the Swiss Federal Department of Finance, and Mr. Rudolph Schoch, Country Director of the Swiss Cooperation Office (SDC) in Tajikistan, in Dushanbe on March 26, according to the Ministry of Finance (MoF) press service.

The sides exchanged views on the situation that had emerged in the country and measures taken to come out of the financial crisis.

In the course of the talks, Najmuddinov noted that the way out of the crisis could be found due to joint efforts.  The minister, in particular, noted that following the government’s anticrisis plan and recommendations of international financial institutions, Tajikistan would be able to come out of the crisis, the MoF press service said.

In the meantime, according to press release issued by the SDC, a high-level delegation of the Swiss Federal Department of Finance consisting of the Director of the Federal Finance Administration, Mr. Peter Siegenthaler, Head of the Section on IMF and International Finance, Mr. Paul Inderbinen, and the Economic Advisor, Mrs. Christina Hürzeler, arrived in Dushanbe on March 25 for a one day visit.

The delegation held consultations with a number of high-ranking Tajik state officials.  The topics included cooperation with Switzerland in the IMF, effective representation of Tajikistan and its interests in IMF, effective work within the common constituency of the Bretton Woods Institutions, cooperation of Tajikistan with the IMF, economic reforms and IMF support, and regional cooperation in Central Asia.

The overall purpose of the visit was to strengthen the relations between Tajikistan and the Swiss Confederation in financial matters of common interest, as well as on issues related to cooperation in the international financial institutions, the IMF in particular.
