Tajikistan’s Democratic Party has at least two-three candidates to nominate for the November presidential election, says DPT deputy head

DUSAHNBE, September 4, Asia-Plus — Tajikistan’s Democratic Party (DPT) hosted a news conference in Dushanbe on September 4.

Mr. Jumaboy Niyozov, the DPT deputy head, speaking to journalists noted that “election marathon” (election campaign) had started in Tajikistan long before the date of presidential election was set against all legal norms.

Political parties should start nominating candidates 50 days before the election, and the resolution on setting the date of the presidential election will come into effect after its publication in a parliamentary and government newspapers.

Besides, according to him, like the previous elections media in the country cover the upcoming important political event one-sidedly.

On the DPT’s position in the upcoming presidential elections, Mr. Niyozov noted that it would be known after September 24, when the party extraordinary congress would be held.   “Only after that we will be able to say whether we support fielding a single candidate or we field our won candidate in the presidential election due in November,” Jumaboy Niyozov said, stressing that the DPT has at least two or three candidates, who could be nominated for the election.

“We considered this issue at a meeting of the party managing board that was held in Dushanbe on September 2,” said Jumaboy Niyozov, “We also considered legitimacy of actions of the initiative group, which convoked an extraordinary congress and elected new leader of the party.”  “It was noted during the meeting that the election and congress were illegitimate.”

A Saturday meeting also considered the issue of election of editor-in-chief of the party’ official newspaper “Adolat” (Justice) as well as other organizational issues, according to Mr. Niyozov.
