Over 18,300 tons of cotton yielded in Tajikistan so far this year

DUSHANBE, August 28, Asia-Plus — Tajikistan has yielded more than 18,300 tons of cotton by August 28, which comprises 3.3 percent of this year”s target determined at 550,000 tons, according to information from the Ministry of Agriculture.  

Mr. Ikhtiyor Ashurov, the head of the agriculture department of the State Committee for Statistics, has told Asia-Plus the Khatlon province has pledged to produce 329,000 tons of cotton this year.  Of 18 cotton-growing farms in the province, 15 have to date launched a cotton-picking campaign.  They have gathered 17,353 tons of cotton to this day, which is 5.3 percent of the target.   

In central Tajikistan, of five cotton-growing districts, only Tursunzoda and Hissor have launched the cotton campaign.  Cotton farmers in Hissor and Tursunzoda have yielded some 1,000 tons of cotton by August 28, which is 2 percent of this year’s target, which has been determined at 49,700 tons.  

Cotton farmers in the northern province of Sughd have not yet launched the cotton campaign.  Their target is 171,300 tons of cotton. 

The Asia-Plus interlocutor says that Sarband, Yovon and Kulob districts in Khatlon and ten cotton-growing districts in the Sughd province will launch the cotton campaign this week.

We will recall that last year, Tajikistan yielded 447,408 tons of cotton, which was 73.3 percent of the target determined at 610,000 tons.
