Tajikistan has recently purchased 27 passenger carriages from Russia

Date:

Tajikistan has recently purchased 27 passenger carriages from the Russian Federation, Mr. Azim Ibrohim, the Minister of Transport of Tajikistan, told reporters in Dushanbe on July 24.

“In total it is necessary to purchase 1000 carriages and 2 or 3 locomotives in order to replenish the country’s rolling stock,” the minister said.

According to data from the Ministry of Transport (MoT), the car repair enterprises of the State Unitary Enterprise (SUE) Rohi Ohani Tojik (Tajik Railways) have overhauled 82 carriages, including 89 cargo cars and three passenger carriages.

Press release issued by a MoT notes that to-date, only 474 cargo cars (which is only 24.1 percent of the total number of cargo cars of the country’s rolling stock), 300 passenger cars (76.6 percent) and 16 locomotives (36.6 percent) are operational, while the others have already outlived their service life.

Tajikistan's rolling-stock now reportedly includes 1,471 cargo cars, 392 passenger carriages and 44 diesel locomotives.

The total length of rails in Tajikistan is more than 950 kilometers; of that, 680 kilometers are the main railways.  At present there are more than 30 railway stations in the country.

It is to be noted that rail transport in Tajikistan is limited, as the railroad system totals only 938.9 kilometers of non-electrified, single-track railway, including 650.9 kilometers of main railroads, 218 kilometers of station tracks, and 67.2 kilometers of access railway tracks.  The operational length of the country’s railway track is 597.7 kilometers.

The greater part of the railways in Tajikistan was constructed when the country was part of the Soviet Union. They were built to Russian gauge (1520mm).
